Discover one of the world's most vibrant regions with your family

The Indian Subcontinent includes the Indian Peninsula, the Himalayas and the Maldives and is an incredibly diverse corner of the world, filled with epic landscapes, magical cites and wonderful wildlife. It is also home to countless fascinating cultures so when it comes to a family trip with a difference, it really is hard to beat.

India is a whirlwind of colour and sound, its energy undeniably contagious. There are incredible palaces and forts to discover, whose stories come to life with expert private guides. Then there are some of the world’s fastest growing cities, sprawling metropolises that miraculously give way to scenic countryside and peaceful hill stations, where life has hardly changed in centuries.

And then there’s the wildlife. Few who come to India fail to be mesmerised when face to face with majestic tigers and leopards who stalk through the grasslands, playful monkeys screeching as they  swing through the trees and colourful birds flit through the skies above.

Sri Lanka may be small in comparison, but this island nation packs an awful lot in. Ruined cities, golden beaches, tea plantations and national parks teeming with wildlife make this an incredible destination for families looking for adventure. Sri Lankan life moves at a gentle pace, especially in resorts on the coast, and children are welcomed warmly by locals.

Nepal is another country that may be small in size but more than makes up for it in character. This is a fantastic destination for active families, with epic hiking trails through the mighty Himalayas.

Bhutan is a small but incredibly diverse country. The Land of the Dragons is celebrated for its peaks and its unspoilt natural environment hosts a huge range of biodiversity. Primates such as the slow loris and the rhesus macaque have made the country their home, along with animals such as the Bengal tiger, clouded and snow leopards, the black bear and the red panda.

And for those that love the beach, the picture-perfect islands of the Maldives are hard to beat with their sugar-white sands and sapphire-blue seas. Offering incredible underwater worlds to discover and luxury hotels with activities for children of all ages, it is a beautiful destination where you’ll certainly be kept entertained.

Luxury family-friendly accommodation in the Indian Subcontinent

There are many incredible places to stay at in the Indian Subcontinent. Here are some of our favourites, handpicked by our travel designers

Delhi

The Imperial
A driveway lined with tall palm trees leads to the grand white facade of The Imperial, one of Delhi’s most iconic hotels. Harking back to the days of the Raj, The Imperial is filled with old-world charm, its fascinating history a permanent presence. The opulence of colonial India is felt from the moment you enter; the high ceilings, crystal chandeliers and artwork from the 18th and 19th centuries giving a sense of grandeur. Rooms are beautifully styled with antique furniture, marble floors covered in Indian rugs, and photographs of iconic Indian landmarks and events on the walls. When the hotel opened its doors in the 30s, it became a meeting point for figures including Nehru, Ghandi, Jinnah and Lord Mountbatton who came to discuss the partition of India and the creation of Pakistan. Photographs of the various battalions during the British Raj adorn the walls and the 1911 Restaurant is a celebration of the year Delhi became the new capital of India. You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to eating and drinking, with four restaurants offering south east Asian, gourmet Indian and European cuisine. There is also a pastry shop and a tea lounge with a glass domed ceiling and tinkling fountain and the hotel’s two bars are some of the city’s most popular. An outdoor swimming pool is set within the verdant gardens of the hotel and there is a spa offering Ayurvedic therapies for when you want to simply drift away. Once you’ve recharged your batteries, head out and explore Delhi – you’re ideally located on Janpath, just moments from the renowned shopping district of Connaught Place and a short rickshaw ride from India Gate.

Agra and the Taj Mahal

The Oberoi Amarvilas
Just 600m from the magnificent Taj Mahal, The Oberoi Amarvilas allows guests to appreciate the beauty of this iconic monument at every moment. Enjoy watching the colours of the marble change throughout the day, from its rosy glow in the morning light to the golden tint as the sun begins to set. The hotel is approached via a driveway, lined with trees and lit with flaming torches at night. As you enter, step inside a Mughal-style quadrant with an arched passageway decorated with gold leaf frescoes, and cascading fountains. Hallways leading to the rooms and suites are lined with wooden blinds with hand-printed golf motifs, the walls adorned with Mughal coins and antique Indian fabrics. The rooms themselves are full of old-world charm with hand woven rugs and intricately decorated wooden furniture. Each one offers uninterrupted views of the Taj Mahal with some of the suites featuring bathtubs that look out over the monument. The Esphahan restaurant specialises in Indian food with traditional curries and fluffy breads served on burnished metal plates. Enjoy a cup of tea or coffee under the gold domed ceiling of the lounge or enjoy a drink and a game of backgammon in the bar. The spa is centred around a domed marble steam room and offers a range of treatments inspired by ancient Indian rituals. There is also a fully-equipped gym that looks out over the hotel’s pristine gardens and an outdoor pool, which is partly covered so you can take refuge in the shade.

Yala National Park

Leopard Trails Yala Camp
Leopard Trails Yala Camp provides an immersive and intimate safari experience right on the edge of Yala National Park. The camp comprises eight tents – six classic and two luxury – all of which are air conditioned with en suite bathrooms, personal outdoor showers, charging points and just canvas separating you from the wilderness outside. The luxury tents are more spacious and can accommodate families. A fire, bar, lounge and dining area sit at the camp’s heart. Dining is a convivial experience, with chefs serving up authentic Sri Lankan cuisine, an endless array of colourful and fragrant curries and sambols, and Western dishes. There are twice daily game drives into the park accompanied by an in-house naturalist who is ever willing to share their knowledge of the Yala’s wild elephants, leopards, sloth bear, mugger crocodiles and numerous birds on nature trails. For younger guests, there is a Junior Ranger Programme where they can learn about tracks, bird calls and wildlife conservation.

Kandy

The Elephant Stables
Located on top of a hill a few minute’s tuktuk ride from the bustle of central Kandy with a fabulous view over the sacred city and mountains behind, The Elephant Stables is a charming boutique hotel marrying colonial Art Deco glamour and modern comfort with a Sri Lankan twist. Once the private home of Sir Cuda Ratwatte, a former mayor of Kandy, many elephants were once housed in the gardens, hence the name. The Elephant Stables has seven rooms including spacious rooms with balconies and a collection of stylish suites, most of which have separate bedrooms and thus ideal for families, including a vast royal tent.   All rooms have complimentary minibars, air-conditioning and DVD players with a collection of vintage Sri Lankan films. There’s a bar, living room, reading room and spa while outside there is an infinity pool with a truly fabulous view. The hotel also has a collection of vintage British cars from the 1950s and early 1960s, including a mustard yellow Mini Moke, which are huge fun on local drives around Kandy and longer trips such as to Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. The restaurant serves hearty breakfasts, light European lunches, afternoon tea and set menu dinners which feature traditional Sri Lankan curries, Asian Fusion or Western cuisine.

Maldives

Cheval Blanc Randheli
One for design-savvy travellers, the resort was conceptualised by the go-to-guy for extravagant hotels, Jean-Michel Gathy, who has now brought detailed perfection to the Maldives. Every element of the resort oozes chic style, from the sand-disc artwork to the palm-fringed slate-lined pool and marbled bar. The 45 villas, each with its own private infinity pool, overwater deck, private beach and exquisite bathroom, have drawn celebrities and royalty including Prince William. Travel 40 minutes by seaplane from Malé to reach this eye-pleasing oasis. Guests can pamper themselves with spa treatments, an onsite hair salon and impeccable service with each villa assigned its own butler and concierge. Other than the obvious water sports options including snorkelling and diving at nearby reefs, the resort also has a tennis court, gym and a kids’ club.

Pokhara

The Pavilions Himalayas
Nestled in a tranquil valley near the banks of a meandering mountain-fed river, sits The Pavilions Himalayas. Set against the backdrop of the epic mountain range, this eco-sensitive resort is the perfect place to relax while enjoying Nepal’s outstanding natural beauty. Dedicated to the sustainability of the natural environment and benefiting the lives of the local people, The Pavilions Himalayas is involved in several projects and programmes. The 14 spacious villas, completely powered by solar energy, are spread across organic farmland, combining traditional charm with modern luxury. From your private terrace, you can admire the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas and immerse yourself within the quiet and peaceful way of life in the countryside. For those wanting a little more independence, there’s a family cottage located within the village, which comes with its own garden and kitchen. The great outdoors beckons, and you can choose to spend your time trekking, birdwatching or exploring the nearby Phewa Lake. For when you want to simply sit back and relax, head to the spa or outdoor pool, and when hunger strikes, the Clubhouse serves authentic Nepali cuisine with much of the produce grown on-site.
