Wild Cambodia

Shinta Mani Wild
It’s the very definition of experiential travel, from the lodging itself to the activities on offer. Shita Mani Wild is the vision of world-renowned designer, Bill Bensley, who purchased the land and whose mission it is to protect this beautiful part of the country from poaching, mining and logging. The camp has partnered with the Wildlife Alliance, whose rangers have a station on-site, to help conserve this precious wildlife corridor. The camp consists of 15 luxury tents positioned along the Tmor Rung River. Their location ensures guests enjoy the best possible views and the tents are positioned so everyone has their own little part of the forest. The walk from some of the tents to the main camp can be quite long, so there are rangers on hand with lamps to help you back at night. Each tent has a story to tell, from the Botanist’s Tent to the National Geographic Tent and while each one is unique, they are all impeccably styled with gorgeous textiles, artwork, fascinating artefacts and one-of-a-kind pieces of furniture. Many have freestanding bath tubs on the decking for the ultimate soak. At the heart of the camp is the Headquarters, where guests enjoy their meals. The team here are passionate about using local, seasonal produce, much of which has been foraged from the surrounding forest. For something really special, there is the option to enjoy a waterfall picnic. The Landing Zone Bar overlooking the Big Raging Sister Waterfall is the place for truly exquisite cocktails. And, if you don’t want to walk there, you can always zip line in! The camp’s pool has been designed to look like a cistern and the lining was painted jet black so the water reflects the details of the forest. The Khmer Tonics is the camp’s spa nestled amongst the rocks, and here you can indulge in a river-stone foot massage while soaking in a waterfall pool. There is so much to do during a stay at Shinta Mani Wild, from mountain biking and kayaking to fishing, foraging and cooking classes. There’s even the option to head out on an anti-poaching patrol to experience the vital work being done by the Wildlife Alliance.

Sumba

NIHI Sumba Island
This eco-friendly resort takes a responsible approach to hospitability, and its restaurants make use of organically grown produce from the grounds, while its foundation and community outreach programmes seek to benefit and upskill the local villages, and protect the environment. Positioned within the diverse natural setting of 438 acres of tropical forest, rice terraces and grasslands on a private stretch of beautiful beach, Nihi Sumba Island provides utter scenic seclusion. All rooms are tucked amongst the trees, with huge windows and private terraces or balconies boasting expansive sea views. With 32 villas, all made from reclaimed wood by local craftsmen and furnished with unique regional artefacts, the accommodation here is exceptional. Meanwhile, the restaurant is a fusion between Eastern and Western cuisine, with an extremely accommodating team and chef. Though dining tends to be a communal affair with couples, families and friends, the staff will happily arrange private dining in your room or at one of many private romantic locations among the grounds. During the day, guests can try their hand at surfing along the beach or take in the Sumbanese countryside and culture by horseback. Those looking for a more relaxing pursuit can indulge in the Jungle Spa, with a massage or yoga class. There’s also fishing trips, stand-up paddleboarding and diving to be enjoyed, plus destination dining and a sea turtle hatchery.

Ubud

Capella Ubud
Discovered amid lush green forests and scenic rice paddy fields, Capella Ubud is a unique tented hotel presenting a luxurious experience and a relaxing oasis on the doorstep of Ubud’s most beautiful natural surroundings. The hotel consists of 22 individually styled one-bedroom tents and one tented two-bedroom lodge, all immaculate in their artistic décor and furnishings. Offering rice terrace, rainforest, river or valley views, each lodging is equipped with modern facilities to further enhance the comfort of your stay, as well as a private saltwater pool for relaxing soaks. The two-bedroom lodge offers a larger space in which to unwind and is well suited to a small family. Inspired by the early European settlers from the 1800s, each tent’s decorative theme is determined by the skill set of the various inhabitants of the area’s 19th century camps, with the likes of The Carpenter’s Tent showcasing the tools used by craftsmen and artisans, while The Naturalist’s Tent depicts the heritage of the camp’s zoologists and botanists. Seasonable and sustainable dining can be enjoyed at the Mads Lange dining room, while delicious Asian BBQ is served at the intimate Api Jiwa restaurant. For some refreshment after a cooling swim, the poolside Mortar and Pestle Bar serves up a range of snacks and drinks, including a creative cocktail menu. There is also The Camp Fire from where you can relax under the stars with a hot chocolate in hand, serenaded by the hotel’s jungle orchestra. A myriad of wellness treatments can be enjoyed at the hotel’s extensive spa, while the tented gymnasium allows guests to get active across the likes of yoga and pilates classes – perfectly in keeping with Bali’s sense of spiritual well-being.
