Luxury accommodation in Europe

There are many incredible places to stay in Europe. Here are some of our favourites, handpicked by our travel designers:
canaves_oia_suites_pool-deck

Santorini

Canaves Oia Suites
Décor in the 26 spacious suites is sophisticated and minimalist, playing off the iconic architecture of the region. Modern touches make for a comfortable stay, while views out over the caldera and the Aegean Sea and private pools allow for ultimate relaxation. The white buildings and the fresh blues of the sea and pools make for a tranquil place to unwind. Freshen up in a luxurious rain shower, laze on a private veranda, take a dip in a private infinity pool, or enjoy a meal in an open-air dining area. Whether you’re looking for a delicious breakfast to start the day, or a romantic meal under the night sky, Petra Restaurant serves an array of authentic Greek and Mediterranean dishes. Enjoy fresh fish at the poolside, while sipping on a refreshing cocktail. The Canaves Oi Spa menu offers a selection of signature treatments to make your stay truly relaxing. The space was once a 17th century wine cave and hasn’t lost any of its charm, the perfect place to treat yourself.

Paros

Rooster, Antiparos
Antiparos is a jewel in the Adriatic sea, just a short ferry trip from the main island of Paros. Here, on this tranquil island, rich in natural beauty you’ll find The Rooster. Set in 30 acres of rolling hills and giving way to soft sand dunes and eventually twinkling crystal clear sea waters. This exclusive beachfront property is made up of 16 private houses, with a design, architecture and decor that’s respectful to the island. Each of the private guest houses are individually designed to offer privacy without distracting from the connection to the views and natural landscapes. The furniture and decor is in keeping with the island’s own heritage. For example, walls are painted with neutral tones or whitewash and there’s comfortable low slung wooden chairs with soft furnishings made from traditional textiles. Each house is complete with a bedroom, living area, bathroom (with outdoor shower) and a luxurious private pool with secluded lounging areas shaded by greek gardens or cabana style, wooden canopies. Aside from the private houses guests can also choose to stay in the Farmhouse, around 1.5km away from The Rooster the private Farmhouse is surrounded by kitchen gardens, calming outdoor social areas and it has its own private pool. The house has its own kitchen where your meals will be prepared or where you can dive in yourself to enjoy the fresh produce from the nearby farm – a great option for families.  The Rooster is a lifestyle and wellness retreat that allows guests to connect with themselves and nature. The House of Healing is an intrinsic part of daily life at The Rooster where a journey of mind and spirit centeredness can be achieved through personalised therapies such as Rooster Rituals, Ayurveda treatments, facials, massages and yoga. There’s also a gym for those who want to compliment their beach walks and sea swimming with extra activity. Close to the main hotel is The Farm, another venue to be explored. At The Farm guests are invited to experience a traditional ‘bostani’ (kitchen garden), vegetable fields, open kitchen cooking, private dining and the chance to learn about local, seasonal ingredients. The hotel itself offers its own indoor restaurant with huge windows and doors that open out to the gardens and with sea views. There’s an atmospheric bar with loungers for total relaxation as you sip your drinks, a secret garden and courtyard and the cuddle puddle. The cuddle puddle is a wooden tipi that sits within the dunes to capture the island’s signature, glowing sunsets.

Six Senses Douro Valley surrounded by lush greenery

Douro Valley

Six Senses Douro Valley
Set on a wide bend of the Douro river amid wonderful woodland, Six Senses Douro Valley occupies a thoroughly renovated 19th-century manor house with fabulous views out over the surrounding vineyards. The interior blends original features and monumental beams with contemporary artwork. Many of the rooms feature vast floor-to-ceiling windows and wonderful views. Suites overlook the Douro, and there is a selection of multi-roomed apartments and a villa with its own pool for the utmost privacy. Three restaurants and a range of dining areas celebrate the region, with seasonal produce from the fertile valley and the estate’s organic gardens. Sample some of the Wine Library’s hundreds of vintages with nightly tastings, or watch the sunset with a cocktail on the terrace. An expansive spa has ten treatment rooms and there is both a heated indoor and scenic outdoor pool. Many of the experiences here are, naturally, wine-focused. Vineyard tours, port tasting and unique harvesting experiences are complemented by trips to explore the historic towns and villages that dot this UNESCO World Heritage landscape. The adventurous can head out hiking, mountain biking and canyoning, while river cruises are a more relaxed way to spend an afternoon.

Tuscany

Borgo Pignano
Sat amidst the rolling green hills, deep in the heart of Tuscany, you will find the inviting haven of Borgo Pignano, a hotel built into a perfectly renovated 18th-century country villa. From this 750-acre hilltop estate, which offers exquisite views of Tuscany’s olives groves, fields and woodlands, you can indulge in the upmost comfort found in the 14 elegantly furnished rooms and suites. While the hotel has been renovated, it hasn’t forgotten its historic roots, and some rooms still feature their original frescoes under rustic wood beams. The hotel grows a lot of its own produce and has also started growing antique and heritage crops. The broad cross-section of flowers and plants you’ll find here attract bees, helping with the vital process of pollination of vegetables and fruit trees. The infinity pool is certainly one of the hotel’s most enticing features, cradled by old stone walls and looking out towards the impressive landscape. The wellness centre can be found just a few steps from the main building and offers a range of treatments which have been created using organic ingredients grown on the estate. Over in the hotel restaurant you can dine on fine Italian cuisine made from home-grown and locally sourced ingredients. The pasta here is made from wheat flour produced from grains grown on the property, so you can be assured you are really getting a true taste of Tuscany. This hotel is perfect for those seeking both relaxation and a range of exciting activities. Yoga classes take place inside the property, while those wishing to explore the outdoors can do so on horseback, or by bike. Painting classes, cooking classes and wine tastings are all part of the fun here at Borgo Pignano, making every stay unforgettable.

Meals on the Belmond Royal Scotsman are as memorable as the landscapes you are travelling through. Served in mahogany-pannelled dining cars, you can relish hearty Highland breakfasts, seasonal lunches and in the evening enjoy gourmet dining with fresh local ingredients accompanied by fine wines. After dinner, unwind with a scotch malt whisky as a local Highlander shares tales of life in Scotland through the centuries, or simply retire to your cabin for a peaceful sleep as the train settles into a siding for the night.

Killarney National Park and the South West Coast

Sheen Falls Lodge
Set upon the backdrop of Kenmare Bay and overlooking the picturesque Sheen Falls, this five-star Relais & Chateaux hotel is renowned for its tranquil beauty and just a short drive will lead you to the quaint Irish town of Kenmare. Found within each of its rooms is luxury and comfort at every turn. Some feature open fireplaces and serene views over either Kenmare Bay or the cascading Sheen Waterfalls, providing the perfect haven in which to unwind. Food lovers rejoice, for one of the most renowned features of the hotel is the elegant, two AA Rosette restaurant, The Falls. Here you can indulge in dishes of the highest calibre using local ingredients like home-smoked salmon caught on the estate and organic vegetables grown in the surrounding area. For a more casual experience and to delight a sweet tooth, head over to the Sun Lounge for afternoon tea or enjoy a glass or two at the stylish cocktail bar which boasts the largest wine cellar in Ireland. The 300-acre estate lends itself to a plethora of exciting outdoor activities. Go salmon fishing on the River Sheen or enjoy a round on the nearby golf courses. Meandering walks are a must, and complimentary hotel bicycles allow for riverside cycles. For a more exhilarating experience, ride horseback across the dramatic landscapes of the countryside, or kayak in the surrounding waters. Falconry, clay pigeon shooting, hill walking, and tennis are also on the extensive list. After a long day of exploration, relaxation awaits in the serene and stylish spa.
